Hi, my name is Kevin, but I go by CasinoKev online. I started AtomicBet.com because I believe their is a need for simple gambling tutorials and advice for players who want an edge, whether online or at a land-based casino. Below you’ll find my personal story about learning to gamble and how I got to point of starting this website.

My Personal Story

Like many of you, my personal story about gambling is one of ups and downs. That’s really the name of the game isn’t it? Take some risks and try to come out ahead in the end.

My first experience in a casino came at age 21. My Dad and much older brother had been going to the Gulf Coast casinos in Biloxi, Mississippi for many years. They talked about taking me on my 21st birthday and it sounded like a good time. On the big day, I brought along a friend and we all headed to the coast. We had a room at the Grand Casino Biloxi so we could relax and have some drinks for the first time (legally).

I was a broke college student so I didn’t bring much to gamble with, but fortunately, my Dad and Brother took care of me. I tried my luck at some video poker, roulette, and slots. It was fun, but the most exciting thing was watching my older brother blow hundreds at a time on these games. He was definitely a gambler by all definitions. Most of his time was spent on slot machines ranging from $1 to $5.

He also used an interesting betting strategy on Roulette (what I later would know as the Martingale betting system mixed with the gambler’s fallacy). He told me to watch the Roulette board and wait for a black or red to hit 3 times in a row, then start betting on the opposite. He said it was a good bet because “it had to hit the other color eventually”. If he lost the first bet, he would double it the next time and continue doing that until he won. I watched him do this several times and walk away with a few hundred dollars.

On this particular trip, I played very conservatively and came out ahead.

Online gambling and me

My next experience was with online gambling. One night in my dorm room, I was reading up on casino games when I saw an advertisement for 888 Online Casino. I decided to make a deposit because of the free bonus money, but because of my lack of knowledge on managing my bets and casino game strategy I quickly lost my deposit and the bonus money.

How I lost $1000 in 5 Minutes

Again, this was back when I was young and dumb. As you may recall, my brother the uber-gambler taught me how to play roulette. I believed what my he said about Roulette strategy, and decided months later to give it a shot at Harrah’s in New Orleans. I was having a good time and winning a lot.

Then, the table went cold and I started losing. It kept hitting black so I bet on red, and then doubled my bet on red, and doubled it again! Then I went bust. But I just knew it was going to hit RED, so I ran to the ATM to get money and threw $200 on red in an attempt to get even – BLACK! I actually went back AGAIN and took out $400 to put on red and FINALLY it didn’t hit black – it hit double zero.

I was disgusted with the casino, my brother, and myself. This lesson was a valuable one though. Had I continued to win I probably would have never educated myself on the ins and outs of gambling. I didn’t step back into a casino for a long time. And when I did, I played $.25 Video Poker and the occasional slot machine with the $20 I brought. Still, going to a casino was a rare occasion for me at this point.

Online poker

I married the love of my life in 2004 and we moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We happened to find a nice apartment complex and met a couple that we had a lot in common with right away. They were just married a month before us and liked a lot of same things. The guy (Josh) asked me if I played poker. I told him I played some penny-ante home games when I was younger.

He said poker had exploded on TV. and he had started playing for play money online. It wasn’t long until he introduced me to the greatest poker movie ever made – Rounders. We all started getting together and playing poker tournaments for fun. Next, we added a $5 buy-in that only added to the excitement.

I started getting serious about learning how to play Texas Hold’em better. I ordered a few poker books and signed up for a play money account on Party Poker. I studied Texas Hold’em strategy until I felt confident enough to deposit money online. I took advantage of the Party Poker deposit bonus and started making money right away. Later, I found about bonus whoring and started going to different online poker sites to get their poker bonuses.

Starting with $500, I had several thousand dollars in just a few weeks. My wife needed a new(er) car so we cashed out the money to purchase her a car for cash. Every since then I have played poker part time for fun. Even though I’ve gotten much better over the years, I continue to build a bankroll and then cash it out for whatever reason. One of my goals is to build a large bankroll to play in the World Series of Poker and high stakes cash games.

Online poker is also what helped me get started as a gambling affiliate. I found out you could make money promoting real money poker sites and real money casinos so I started my own website. My first site (which I have since sold) was a niche poker site dedicated to Mississippi poker players. Since then, I have built sites in a variety of niches including slots and blackjack.
