Hi David, Thanks for the question.

Probability is the measure of how likely a single event is to occur. The probability of any given outcome can be determined using this formula;

P(event) = Number of Ways the Event Can Occur
           -------------------------------
           Number of Possible Outcomes

So in the coin flip example,

P(heads) = 1 (# of heads)
           --------------
           2 (# of sides of the coin)
= 1/2 or 50% to land on heads

House edge is the difference in your actual odds of winning (true odds) and the money odds the casino offers you if you win the bet.

So, let's say the casino sets up a coin flip game - They offer you $100 if the coin will land on heads, and you lose the $100 on tails. In this game, you'd break even over time. There is no house edge.

But that's not how casino's work. Instead, they offer you $98 for landing on heads, and you lose $100 for tails. This gives the game a house edge of 2%.

The probability of landing on heads is still 50%. Only now, if you continue making that bet, you're going to lose $2 for every $100 wagered over time.

If we say that a person has a 50 50 chance of winning a coin toss can we then say that if the house has a house advantage of 2% that the individual has a 48% chance of winning against the house probability of 52%?

If this is not the case please explain how I can understand what is truly going on here

I've never imagined blackjack could be this confusing :p All i know is that I have to be close to 21 and I'll win. I love online blackjack though and I am playing it with williamhillcasino. Online because,it's practical! But the bottom line is that, Blackjack can be played by all. WOW.. nice article. thanks.

Black Jack is the least profitable game for a casino, and there is a real chance of winning. It's my favorite game, too. But what is it about splitting a pair of 6's? When the dealer has a 2. I don't agree with that one.
