When I started taking gambling seriously, I asked myself the question “what is the best gambling game?”. Or in other words, “what are the gambling games that offer the best odds of winning?” The answer I discovered wasn’t that surprising at first.

The more skill the gambling game involves, the better your odds of winning, if you use correct strategy.

That sounds simple enough right? But I still needed to learn which games were best based on my own knowledge and skill set.

In this article, I’ll share with you the differences in games of skill and chance, plus my list of the best ways to gamble for money.

Gambling Games of Skill Versus Games of Chance

Generally speaking, gambling games are all “equal opportunity” games, or games of chance. This implies that any honest game, if played forever, offers you the same chance at a payoff as any other player in the game.

Anything you find in a casino is a game of chance, but there is a subset of these pastimes. There are games of chance that also incorporate some skill.

These games of skill offer players the opportunity of increasing the chance for higher payoffs by making smart playing decisions,. Learning how to make smart decisions when playing is necessary to become a truly serious and successful player.

The most obvious game of chance in a casino is a slot machine. Slots are most popular because they offer high payouts for less money wagered, and can also be the most exciting.

However, there is little a person can do to alter the outcome of a game of chance in their favor. The odds remain the same for every spin.

Outside of the casino, all sports betting and most card games are considered games of skill. These games require the player to make decisions during game play that affect the outcome of the game.

A game without such decision-making is not a true game of skill. Because skill is required, you can increase your odds of winning a skill game by being knowledgeable about the game mechanics, and making the right decisions based on proven betting and playing strategies. Professional gamblers stick to games of skill for precisely these reasons.

Casinos try to limit the winning potential of skill games by imposing calculated rules, betting limits and payout schedules. The payout schedule determines how much a winner will be paid out for winning a game.

Best Gambling Skill Games to Play

Below, you’ll find my list of the best gambling games to play for money.

1. Poker (Texas Hold’em, 7-Card Stud, Omaha, etc)

This is by far my favorite gambling game – if you can even call it that. The reason poker is the best gambling game is because you’re playing against other players instead of the casino.

Poker rooms take a very small percentage of each pot called “rake”. It’s like a fee for hosting and dealing the poker game.

There are various forms of poker, usually incorporating 5 or 7-card hands. Poker’s objective is to form a hand of cards in order to win the pot of money that players bet.

When to bet and when to fold is the most important strategy in this skill game. One of the most popular forms of poker today is a variation known as Texas Hold ‘Em, which involves making your best hand from two “hole” cards that you hold and five cards laid out on the table.

High-stakes tournaments for Texas Hold ‘Em have been immensely popular, especially with some celebrities.

You can even play poker online for real money against players from all over the world. Playing online is probably the best way for players to learn the game quickly.

My favorite site is Full Tilt Poker because of their easy games (bad players), the fact that I can play for stakes as low as $0.01/$0.02 or as high as $500/$1000, and because they accept US players.

Play against the easiest poker opponents at Full Tilt Poker

2. Sports betting

Sports betting is a highly popular form of gambling. Analyzing sports-related information and figuring out betting situations is a necessary skill to get ahead in this game.

Betting on the outcome of various sporting events, players can bet on most professional and college matches, including basketball, baseball, and football.

The important thing to remember when betting on sports is that, you’re up against other professionals who make a job of analyzing all the necessary sports data to determine their bets.

Online sports betting has exploded in popularity over the past few years. No longer do you have to go to Vegas to bet on sports. If you’re interested in sports betting, make sure to use a reputable site like Sportsbook, who has been around since the early days of the Internet.

Bet on Your Favorite Sports at Sportsbook

3. Horse Race Betting

Similar to sports betting, this game involves betting on the outcome of a race in which horses compete against each other. Picking the winning horse, or a horse that places in one of the top three positions, is the objective here.

Consulting racing forms, a practice known as “reading the sheets,” combines with placing bets, evaluating odds, and finding the horse and jockey with a winning edge, as key skills to develop if you’re interested in horse racing.

Just like with betting on sports, racing fans can bet on horses online. For horse race betting I really like Bodog’s Racebook.

Blackjack – This game, unlike poker, involves players betting against the house each hand. Also known as 21, the object of blackjack is to form a hand that adds up to a total higher than the dealer’s hand, but not exceeding 21. A perfect hand in this game is a blackjack, equaling 11 points, and a ten. Together they total 21, the winning combination.

Craps – Craps is a dice game played on a special table. Truly a game of chance, knowing when and how to place bets is a definitely worthy skill to develop, allowing the chance to increase your winnings. Players make bets on the next roll of the dice, with the house paying out depending on the outcome of each roll.

Video Poker – Sharing a lot similarities with slot machines, video poker machines can be chancy. Knowing which cards to hold in your “hand” and which machines to play are the skills that can help you come out ahead of the risk.

Pai gow poker – This card game is played with a 52-card deck, plus one joker. Each player is given a seven-card hand. A hybrid, this game combines elements of a Chinese domino game known as pai gow, and traditional American poker. Being able to form a winning five-card poker hand, and another two-card hand, is the skill necessary to master pai gow poker.

Like with all games you play for money, especially casino games, you need to find the places with the best odds. One of the best gambling sites I’ve found for odds is Bodog. They offer an all-in-one poker, casino, sportsbook, and racebook that should appeal to people who like to bet on a variety of games (like me!).

Signup here to get a 10% unlimited deposit bonus at Bodog

Games of Chance

Some games of chance do provide the opportunity for a slight edge to the player, but only if the game mechanics are understood beforehand. However, most of these gambling games should be avoided if you want to win money long term.

Lotteries – The worst of the worst

A lottery is a game of numbers, usually used by individual states to generate money.

Sponsored by the state government, playing the lottery involves buying a ticket at a supermarket, convenience store, or other location. The numbers are chosen from a limited number pad, and if the numbers on the ticket match the numbers drawn later, the jackpot is awarded.

These games have astronomically high odds of winning and have been referred to by many as “a tax on the poor”. Playing the lottery can be fun, but don’t make a habit out of buying tickets.

Bingo – Bingo is another numbers game of chance. The player must be the first to fill in a designated pattern on a game board as each number is called from a field. The field includes 75 numbers.

Keno – Keno is usually found in casino restaurants or specific keno lounges. Another numbers game, players choose between 1 and 20 from an available 80 possible numbers. The rest is hoping the player’s numbers are drawn during game play.

Baccarat – Originally from France, Baccarat is a pretty simple game. Two hands are dealt, one for the player and one for the dealer. Players then bet on whether the player’s hand or dealer’s hand will be closer to a total of 9. The dealer does most of the work in this straightforward game.

Roulette – A spinning wheel provides the element of chance in Roulette. Players bet on which number the ball will land once the spinning wheel stops.

Slot Machines – Also known as “one-armed bandits,” slot machines helped build Las Vegas. Players bet on each spin of the mechanical or video reels. People spin the reels hoping for the big jackpot to payout, but simply winning back the original bet counts as a win, too!

Keith Cleaver, a 63-year-old computer instructor who teachers seniors, noted recently that “elderly people are beginning to understand that not knowing how to use a computer is like living in a country where you don’t understand the language.”

In addition, socializing through online chat while playing games reduces seniors’ sense of isolation, a major cause of depression among the elderly.

Meanwhile, a University of Toronto professor has reported that online keeps aging minds sharp and alert.

Ronald Baecker, professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, gathered 14 researchers to form a project called TAG, Technologies for Aging Gracefully. TAG plans to test an online poker game that would allow seniors to chat and strategize with a partner online.

Revision of the U.S. federal Internet gambling law has been postponed to 2010 because of the global economic recession and health care crisis, according to congressional sources.

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) proposed legislation to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. Unlike previous resistance, his congressional colleagues have been too busy with the fallout from the global recession to attack the online gambling issue. However, support is growing for changing American laws.

Recent activity by the U.S. Department of Justice has put a damper on casinos. Federal law enforcement has seized bank accounts and jailed American online players for refusing to testify about what they know of online casinos.

The online gambling industry sees the United States as the world’s biggest potential markets, so online operators are anxiously awaiting congressional action.

Internet Research on problem gambling a factor in law revision
Research on the effects of online gaming may become a focus as federal lawmakers consider how to revise Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), reported PokerNewsDaily.com recently.

The Comprehensive Problem Gambling Act (HR 2906) was introduced in June, 2009 by U.S. Reps. Jim Moran (D-VA), Lee Terry (R-NE), and Frank Wolf (R-VA). The bill boasts 26 co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle and allocates $71 million over five years for problem gambling awareness, research, and treatment. Its language was incorporated into Senator Robert Menendez’s (D-NJ) SB 1597, the Internet Poker and Game of Skill Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act.

Poker News Daily interviewed Keith Whyte, head of the National Council on Problem Gambling. Whyte said that a lot of his organization’s research doesn’t pertain to online gaming and that there may be significant differences between Internet and live players.

Whyte noted that many online gamblers tend to be young men who gamble 14 hours a day online to the detriment of work and family life. He cited as risk factors for gambling problems the Internet’s “high speed of play, social isolation, use of credit cards, higher limits, and easy access.”

Whyte also was asked whether industry regulation such as that proposed by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) would deter gambling problems. He responded that his organization has had no confirmation that regulated gambling results in more responsible gaming, because state governments aren’t collecting or releasing statistics on problem gambling.

There have been a lot of poker strategy books written, but not too many of them touch on lowball games. There is a lot to know about lowball poker that can make you a better player.

The more information you gain on the game the stronger you will be against your opponents. Knowing the best lowball poker books to learn from is pretty important so that you aren’t wasting your precious time reading boring information that isn’t that useful.

Here are few lowball poker books that are very informative and helpful for lowball poker players. These books are written by some of the best poker pros in the world and are jam packed with tons of information about the game.

Lowball Books

Doyle Brunson’s Super System – Super System is a great poker book overall and it touches in on a lot of different angles about lowball poker.

Doyle Brunson is one of the best poker players in the world and holds 13 World Series of Poker bracelets. He wrote this book for players to learn from and to help them aspire into strong players who win big. The book covers quite a few different forms of poker including 2-7 lowball.

Doyle and his cohorts elaborate on the importance of understanding bad players and how to capitalize on them. He also talks about how to take advantage of players who draw incorrectly on a regular basis.

Daniel Negreanu has written a fantastic section on 2-7 lowball which is included in Super System. Even though the no limit holdem advice in Super System is thought to be dated the lowball poker sections, especially Negreanu’s sections, are still considered world class!

Super System 2 – Super System 2 is another decent book which covers lowball poker. This book was designed to expand upon Super System 1 and update the concepts and theories it contained.

The lowball section focuses more on odds and there‘s a great section which includes drawing odds in lowball games. If you only buy one of the Super System books go for the second one because it’s more up to date.

Theory of Poker – Theory of Poker is written by David Sklansky who is one of the top poker brains of our generation.

Theory of poker goes over a lot of different topics, but more in depth and focused on explaining the theory behind the plays that are correct to make. This helps the reader to really learn the reasoning behind making the plays that they are told are correct.

It explains key concepts you need to understand to succeed at any form of poker. Sklansky touches a little on drawing and the ideas behind taking draws, but doesn’t go too much into it. There are quite a few examples from Razz cash games within the book.

Sklansky On Razz – Sklansky on Razz is considered to be the bible on Razz poker, much like Super System and Texas Holdem. It was published in 1983 but is still considered to be the best Razz poker strategy book ever written.

It’s actual out of print at the moment, but the newer book Sklansky on Poker includes the same Razz material.

These great lowball poker books will help you to become a better player who plays with more confidence and is much more skilled. These books are a must have for any serious lowball poker player.

If you’re not so much of a book person then check out Lowball Poker a website dedicated to lowball poker strategy.

From Massachusetts to Florida, Pennsylvania to Minnesota, casino friends and foes are gearing up to wage war over the expansion of legalized gambling.

In Massachusetts, former governor and presidential candidate Michael Dukakis has joined up with United to Stop Slots in Massachusetts. The former governor spoke at a recent Boston rally against state legislation supporting casinos. As a state legislator in 1971, Dukakis voted against the bill that set up the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Backers of the Massachusetts expansion insist that developing resort casinos will bring jobs and money. They cite the success of two Connecticut casinos, Foxwoods MGM Grand and Mohegan Sun, where Massachusetts gamblers now play.

In Minnesota, state senator Dick Day, a prominent Republication, has resigned his seat to become a full-time lobbyist for the proposal to allow slot machines at state racetracks. The proposition would direct some of the proceeds for a new Minnesota Vikings stadium, a project that Day supports, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Day will lead a newly formed nonprofit lobbying group, Racino Now, which reportedly has taken in $250,000 in donations from Minnesota racing horse owners.

In Pennsylvania, a long-expected bill to allow slots parlors to add table games passed its first hurdle in the state House on Dec. 14. The legislation had been expected to be adopted much sooner, lawmakers left for their annual Pennsylvania Society weekend in New York City without completing the gambling legislation, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The bill also would enact multiple reforms to the state’s regulation of casinos. It is expected to raise some $320 million in tax revenue over the first two fiscal years. It would legalize table games such as poker, blackjack and craps.

In Florida, Rep. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, a major supporter of gambling in the Florida Legislature, was reported to predict that a “broad” gambling bill would come before the state’s two houses when its regular annual session begins in March. Galvano said he wants his colleagues to adopt legislation that would govern all of Florida’s $7 billion gambling industry, one of the nation’s largest with pari-mutuel dog and horse racing, slot machines and pari-mutuels no-limit poker.

Galvano said he and his colleagues want to take an approach that will reform all of gambling regulation in the Sunshine State.

Meanwhile, according to Sun-Sentinel.com, Florida’s eight tribal casinos – seven of which are owned by the Seminole Nation – generated $1.9 billion in revenue during 2008 despite the global recession. Experts said the addition of blackjack contributed to the jump in 2008 revenue over 2007’s $1.6 billion.

American online gamblers probably ought to send Christmas cards to U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) for his efforts to open up the U.S. online market.

The Boston Globe has reported that Frank secured a six-month delay in a long-expected federal online gambling crackdown on online casinos and poker sites open to American players. Frank told the Globe that he asked for the six-month reprieve so that he and his House colleagues could continue working on revision of the U.S. anti-gaming laws.

Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank said he doesn’t gamble himself, but that he doesn’t want the federal government invading people’s privacy by telling them what they can or can’t do with their money.

The specific law was intended to go into effect Dec. 1. It would make it illegal for any U.S. credit card company to process charges from online gambling sites. However, in response to Frank’s request and that of the Obama Administration, both the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve agreed to push back enforcement of the act to June 2010.

Many political observers think Frank’s effort to regulate online gambling is a long shot in 2010, an election year, even though such regulation has the potential to generate as much as $42 billion in tax revenue over the next 10 years.

Gambling opponents are miffed that the feds agreed to the delay. Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ) and Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL) contend that online gambling threatens children and teen-agers with gambling addiction. Bachus has said he thinks that any economic benefit from regulating online gambling wouldn’t make up for the hazards of gambling by underage players.

Thus far, individual U.S. gamblers have not been prosecuted by the Justice Department, while online gambling companies operate outside U.S. jurisdiction.

In November, MasterCard announced it would block any online gambling charges including horse racing, which is legal. In response, the congressional delegation from the horse-racing state of Kentucky, home of the Kentucky Derby and dozens of thoroughbred racing horse farms, asked for the new rules to be delayed. MasterCard then rescinded its policy until it can determine what forms of Internet gambling are illegal.

UK regulators are expected to request confirmation from the companies that they’re formal merger talks. Since paying a $105 million settlement to the U.S. Department of Justice to close a long-running inquiry, PartyGaming has bought World Poker Tour assets online bingo company Cashcade for $150 million. Analysts have been predicting consolidation of global online gambling operators in anticipation of the opening of the U.S. market.

Played by up to seven players, Let It Ride is based on five-card stud poker at a standard blackjack table.

Three cards are dealt to each player, and two are dealt as community cards. Each player uses the community cards to complete their hand. You want to try and make a pair of 10s or better using your three cards plus the two community cards on the table. The hierarchy for poker hands in Let It Ride is listed in the table below.

Let It Ride allows you to win with a pair of 10s, while video poker usually requires Jacks or better. As the table shows, the hierarchy for Let It Ride isn’t much different from the one for other poker games, except for the provision that you need a pair of 10s or higher to win. You decide, based on your hand, whether to let your bet ride.

Playing Let It Ride

Let It Ride offers up more camaraderie than blackjack or poker, because you’re not betting against the dealer or other players. You have the chance to win based on the merits of the cards dealt to you.

Each player places equal bets in each of the three circles in front of them at the start of the game. Only then are the cards dealt. The table may require a $5 minimum bet, which means you’re initially betting $15 in total, but you’ll see as you move along that you’ll have the chance to reduce the amount per hand.

The ShuffleMaster machine slides cards three at a time into the dealing tray once the shuffle is complete. These first three cards go face down in front of the betting circles for the first player. The next three go in front of the second player, and so on, until all players have a stack of the three cards before them, with the final stack being placed face down in front of the dealer. One of the dealer’s cards is placed in the discard tray. The remaining two cards will be the community cards.

Once all 52 cards in the deck have been accounted for, the dealer, in turn, moves each player’s stack of cards next to their betting circles. This is the all-clear signal, and you may now pick up your cards. Once you’ve checked your cards, you have the option of pulling back one of your bets. Each player is asked by the dealer whether they would like to take back their first bet or let it ride. When it’s your turn, and the dealer asks which option you’d like, here’s what you should do:

If you decide to take back your first bet, scratch the table with your cards, in a motion towards your body. The dealer will then push the bet toward you and out of the first betting circle, indicating it is no longer in play. Never reach for the bet yourself! Casinos absolutely do not like players reaching for bets after cards have been dealt.

If you’d rather let your bet ride, place your cards face down on table, either sliding them under your first bet or laying them in front of your betting circles.

Once each player has made his or her decision, the dealer will flip over the first community card. Now that you know four out of the five cards for your hand, you’re given the option to take back your second bet, or let it ride. Even if you let your first bet ride, you may still take back your second bet. Let the dealer know your decision in the same manner listed above. Once done, place your three cards face down under your third bet, because you can no longer take back any bets.

After every player has made their respective decisions, the dealer turns up the last community card and then turns over each player’s cards in turn. Winnings for each hand are listed in the following table.

Payout Schedule for Let It Ride

Royal Flush

1,000 to 1

Straight Flush

200 to 1

Four of a Kind

50 to 1

Full House

11 to 1

Flush

8 to 1

Straight

5 to 1

Three of a Kind

3 to 1

Two Pair

2 to 1

Pair of 10s or Better

1 to 1

All bets still riding in the betting circles are paid out by the dealer. For example, if you have a full house with two bets riding on it, you’ll receive a payoff of 11 to 1 on both of them. This means a $10 riding on each of two betting circles would give you $220 in winnings, and you get to keep your original bet!

Small fortunes can be made quickly in Let It Ride if luck is on your side. Many casinos impose a $25,000 limit on Let It Ride tables to limit their losses, though. So instead of letting a $15 bet ride in all three betting circles and winning $45,000 on a royal flush, you’ll only be paid $25,000. Not too likely, anyway, since the odds of getting a royal flush are 1 in 649,740. Never to be afraid to ask about the table limits before you start betting!

Your best bet to make sure you get all that’s coming to you in light of the table limit is to take the game’s max payout and divide it by 3 (your number of bets). If the game max is $25,000, then make your three bets no more than $8 each. That way, you can be sure you’ll get the biggest payout available without betting too much.

Some players think they’ll get the maximum payout if they only take back their first bet. This isn’t true! If your hand doesn’t look much better after the fourth card, take back that second bet no matter what you did with the first bet. Your first and third bets will still be in play.

Any bets riding on a hand that turns out to be a loser are collected by the dealer and become property of the casino.

Riding Your Way to the Top

The strategy arises in this game, as the name suggests, in knowing when to let your bets ride. The game starts with three bets, one in each of the betting circles. As the game progresses, you have two decisions to make:

Once you look at your three cards, you must choose whether or not to let your first bet ride.

After the fourth card is turned up, you must choose whether or not to let the second bet ride.

We’ve covered the small fortunes that you can make playing Let It Ride, but the really good hands don’t come around very often. In addition, Let It Ride doesn’t have room for bluffing. But there is a basic strategy for deciding to let your bets ride:

When to “Let It Ride”

Three Known Cards

(1st Bet Choice)

Four Cards Known

(2nd Bet Choice)

A paying hand (10s or better)

A paying hand (10s or better)

Three consecutive cards of the same suit (a possible open-ended straight) of 3-4-5 or higher (Don’t let the first bet ride with A-2-3 or 2-3-4 in the same suit – those runs are too low)

A possible flush

Three almost consecutive cards of the same suit with one hole and at least one high card (such as 7-8-10 in suit) smaller than 7-8-9-10 or J-Q-K-A.

Four consecutive cards headed by 10, J, Q or K. Don’tlet the second bet ride with a four-card straight unless you also have a possible flush. A, K, Q, J and 10 all of the same suit.

Three almost consecutive cards of the same suit with two holes and at least two high cards (example: 7-10-J).

The Bonus Buck

Once upon a time, you could wager a “bonus” buck when playing Let It Ride, and if your hand happened to win one of the top 100 hands that played in the last tournament, the Let It Ride people would sponsor your participation in the very next tournament. It was definitely attractive, because the grand prize from a Let It Ride tournament would turn you into an instant millionaire!

That’s no longer the case, unfortunately; the Let It Ride people no longer sponsor the tournaments. That doesn’t mean it’s a lost dollar if you wager it, though! To compensate for the loss of tournament sponsorship, the bonus payouts have been increased. This is a new game called Let It Ride Bonus.

Bonus Payouts

It only takes an additional $1 bet to play Let It Ride Bonus. Simply place the bet in the red betting circle, located in front of you. That extra dollar can win you even more money on winning hands! Two pairs or better pay out bonuses now, instead of requiring a straight or better like they used to. A typical bonus payout table will look something like this (though bonuses do vary from casino to casino):

Let It Ride Bonus Payout Schedule

Royal flush

$20,000

Straight flush

$2,000

Four of a Kind

$100

Full House

$75

Flush

$50

Straight

$25

Three of a Kind

$9

Two Pair

$6

Is Let It Ride Worth Playing?

The house edge on Let It Ride is approximately 3.5 percent of a single bet, which amounts to 35 cents even if you have three bets of $10 riding on the hand. On average, a bonus payout will give you back 45 cents for every dollar you wager. Never a smart bet to begin with, it’s even worse now that the potential for winning a million-dollar tournament prize is gone.

Still, some folks think that Let It Ride is a game you might play for the chance at a big score for a small investment. If you’re at the casino just to have fun, you follow a gambler’s No. 1 Rule (never bet more than you can afford to lose), then you might want to check it out.

So you want to learn how to play baccarat? Luckily, baccarat is a simple game that anyone can learn in a matter of minutes. The trick is learning which bets to make in baccarat and which ones to avoid. Once you learn the ins and outs of baccarat strategy, you’ll be ready to take on the house by playing baccarat for real money!

Baccarat Rules & Game Play

Only two hands are dealt in a game of baccarat, regardless of the number of players at the table. Two cards make up a baccarat hand, with one dealt for the banker, the other for the player. The object of the game is to bet on the hand that you believe will be closest, or equal to, nine. You may make a wager on the banker hand, the player hand, or that the hands will tie. The baccarat croupier will make all the playing decisions, freeing you up to just sit back, make your bets, and enjoy the ride.

The betting limits on a full-scale baccarat table will usually be higher than those found on mini games. They should be posted on a plastic placard on the table; if you don’t see the placard, don’t be afraid to ask! For example, you might discover that the regular baccarat tables require a minimum bet of $5 or even $20, and limit the maximum to $4,000. A mini-baccarat table will likely have minimum bets as low as $2 or $3 and a $1,000 maximum bet.

The baccarat croupier – the French word for “dealer” that has migrated to American casinos as well – does all the work in a game. The croupier draws, deals and calls the cards, and then collects and pays off the players’ bets.

Baccarat Cards Have Value

Cards are dealt from six decks held in a shoe, a rectangular device to hold the cards, during a game of mini-baccarat; the full-scale version uses eight decks in a shoe. The following table shows the numeric value of each card in the game:

Card Values for American Baccarat

Card (Any Suit) Card Value in Points

Ace One

2 Two

3 Three

4 Four

5 Five

6 Six

7 Seven

8 Eight

9 Nine

10, Jack, Queen, King Zero

The face cards (Jacks, Queens and Kings), as well as the 10s, equal 0 points in a baccarat game. Every other card is worth its numeric face value. If you’re dealt a hand with a total more than 10, you drop the first digit. This means a hand with two 8s, totaling 16, would give you 6 points in value. This applies to three-card hands as well, such as a hand containing a 9, 7 and 2. This three-card hand may total 18, but its point value is only 8.

A natural is formed whenever a two-card hand offers a point value of 8 or 9. At this point, card dealing stops. Le petite natural is the name of a hand totaling 8, le grande natural for 9. Since 9 is higher than eight, le grande natural will always beat le petite.

Playing Rules of Play

Strict rules govern the course of play after the two hands are dealt. The croupier will make all playing decisions, whether on a mini-baccarat table or a full-scale one. The rules never change. Knowing the rules can help you understand what’s going on, even though it isn’t necessary to play the game.

The first thing the croupier does is look at both to determine if there is an immediate winner:

* The game is over if either the banker hand or the player totals 8 or 9, forming a natural.

* Le grande natural will always win if both hands total 8 or 9. The game ends in a tie if both hands yield equal values.

Without a natural, the hands are played out by the following rules: Regardless of the value of the banker hand, the player hands is always played first. If the banker hand totals 8 or 9, the player doesn’t draw a card. Only when the total is lower than does the player draw a card, based on the rules found in the following table.

Depending on how the player hand turned, the banker may be played next, and is always played last. Whether the player drew a card or not, the banker hand follows the strict rules for play listed in the next table.

Only a total of three cards can be in the hands during each round of play. After all the rules of drawing are followed, the hand with a total closest to nine wins, allowing the croupier to pay out any bets made on the winning hand. A tie between the banker and player hands doesn’t pay out for bets made on banker or player hands. The casino charges a 5 percent commission from any winning banker bets, so even though they’re technically paid out 1 to 1, a banker bet payoff ratio is actually 19:20. Though it may sound enticing with a payout of 8 to 1, it’s best to stay away from tie bets.

A Session for Practice

Let’s try a quick practice game now that you’ve got a better grasp of the rules of baccarat. There will be three spots in front of you once you’re seated at a full-scale or mini-baccarat table. These spots are the areas where you place bets, labeled tie, banker, and player. There will be a shoe on the table, from which the dealer will deal out the cards for the game.

Before the game starts, six or eight decks, after which the dealer asks a player at the table to cut the cards. This means dividing the stacked decks in two, by taking the top half of the stack off and setting it next to the bottom half. Following the cutting, the cards will be placed inside the shoe, with the cut card being placed near the end to remind the dealer when it’s time to reshuffle. The dealer will then remove the first card from the shoe and flip it over. The number on that card indicates the number of burn cards that will be removed from the front of the deck, helping to ensure honest gaming.

After the shuffle, the game will begin. The first step is placing bets, even before any cards are dealt. Players decide to make wagers on which hand they believe will win the round, placing their chips on the banker or player spots. If you’re feeling lucky, you could place a couple chips on the tie spot for a chance at an 8 to 1 payout, but it’s not recommended. Make sure to check for the placard that lists the minimum and maximum betting limits. If you can’t locate it, ask the croupier! Don’t jump into any game without knowing the limits first. The dealer deals out the two-card hands for the player and banker once all bets have been placed.

Sometimes there are three croupiers attending a full-scale baccarat table: one to deal and call cards, two to manage the payoffs. Another fun little part of a full-scale game is that sometimes players are given the option to draw the cards from the shoe and pass them to the caller. The caller will guide you through the routine of drawing cards. Though these things aren’t present in a mini-baccarat game, the rules are still the same. If you’d rather not draw the cards during the game, you can pass on the option and it will move to another player. Players don’t participate at a mini-baccarat table; the single dealer does everything. Even though the player has the opportunity for a little more participation in a full-scale game, the dealer still make all the card-drawing decisions based on the strict rules discussed previously.

The game ends when a third card is drawn for each hand, if no naturals are present, and the hand closest to 8 or 9 wins, all bets being paid off at a rate of 1 to 1. Tie bets pay off 8 to 1, or even 9 to 1 in some places, but are extremely unlikely to ever come up. The cards are discarded after the winning bets are paid off. Once those cards are discarded, players make another round of bets and the dealer repeats the game cycle. Baccarat tables usually play through until the entire shoe is empty.

Here’s How the House Makes Money at Baccarat

The banker hand is given a slight edge in baccarat because the player hand is always played out first. This manages to provide a win rate, if the tie bets are excluded, of 50.7 percent to the banker hand, with player hands winning about 49.3 percent.

A clever person might assume from those odds that betting on the banker would offer a 1.4 percentage advantage and a good chance of winning. Trouble is, that’s not true. It would be, except casinos charge a 5 percent commission for any winning bets made on a banker hand. You’ll be paid 1 to 1 if your banker hand bet wins, but the casino keeps track of their commission. This commission, called a “vigorish” or “vig,” is calculated by the croupier as you play, rather than requiring you to pay it off immediately. This saves time, as dealers would slow down the game if they had to make change at the end of every round. Instead, you’ll be asked to settle the vig when you decide you’re done playing.

With the vigorish in play, banker bets give the casino a 1.17 percent edge, and a 1.36 percent edge on all bets when ties are included.

How to Bet on a Tie

You may be tempted to make a tie bet because it pays 8 to 1 if you win. The problem with a tie bet, however, is that the rules help to prevent ties from occurring as much as possible. The chances of hitting a tie are 9.5 to 1. Couple that with the 8-to-1-payout ratio, and the payback is only 85.5 percent. Those rare casinos that pay 9 to 1 are a little better, paying back as much 95.5 percent for a winning tie bet.

Relax While You Play

Even though the rules are a little complicated, the fact that the dealer does everything during the game make baccarat one of the simplest, most relaxing games available in a casino. There’s no way to screw up so badly that the house gains a greater edge. The best strategy for baccarat is to just stick with banker and player bets, avoiding tie bets as much as possible. That’s the biggest piece of information you need to really enjoy baccarat.

Some baccarat tables have electronic posts rising up, showing the last 30 winning hands. While it may build anticipation, that information doesn’t really help your playing much. There’s no surefire way to decipher the next winning hand in baccarat. You can follow along for interest’s sake, but trying to track winning hands won’t help you predict the future any better.

These posts can help you spot trends at each table, though. Occasionally betting to follow a specific trend can lead to winning bets, but don’t get discouraged if you can’t pinpoint anything. Trends are difficult to spot and there’s no way to tell how long they’ll last.

At the end of the day, baccarat betting is mostly guesswork. Those guesses, however, are definitely fun to make and can win you some big bucks! Large sums of money can be won and lost at a baccarat table, thanks to the smaller house edge in baccarat, making it a favorite game for high rollers. Low rollers aren’t left out, either, since that same edge can let a novice player stick around for quite a while.

The most popular betting system for baccarat is doubling up. If a $5 bet loses this hand, next hand up the bet to $10. Doubling up involves doubling every losing bet the next time around. Sounds like a feasible plan, but there’s one problem: betting systems simply don’t work. Instead, just have fun with it and make sure you’re not betting more than you can afford to lose!
