Online Sports Betting

Sports betting has been offered online for over 15 years, but has recently seen a huge growth in popularity, as more and more people are becoming aware of it.

There are a variety of online sportsbooks (or sports betting sites) which offer the same services as you would find in a Las Vegas sportsbook.

Sports fans can sign up for these online sportsbooks, deposit money, and place a variety of different types of wagers on any sport they would want to bet on.

The first step to online sports betting is finding an online sportsbook site that you want to place your bets at.  Working in the online gambling industry we have reviewed, tested and gathered feedback on a variety of the leading online sportsbooks to ensure we recommend only the bets sportsbooks.

Top 3 Online Sportsbooks

Many of the online sportsbooks have been on the lamb since the government crackdown on poker sites. Therefore, there are currently only two sportsbooks that still accept players from the US. I’ve also included the best sportsbook that I used to play at before 2006 called Bet365. They currently do not accept US players.

1) Bodog Sportsbook – Bodog is a one-stop betting shop. You can bet on all of your favorite sports like Baseball, Basketball, Football, MMA and many more. There are prop bets and futures available for most of the sports. If you would like to learn more, take a look at my Bodog Sportsbook Review. Check out their March Madness Promotion and they are also offering a Bracket Contest as well!

2) Bet Online – Bet Online is more geared to European bettor than Bodog. They feature English Premiere League live betting as well as cricket and rugby. However, you can still bet on NFL action as well as many other U.S. sports leagues. Bet Online has a policy that they will meet or beat all other sportsbook bonuses. It must be a public offer from legitimate North American sports books with a rating of B or better at SportsBookReview.com. You must provide a link to the specific offer in order to qualify.

3) Bet365 Sports – Bet365 was my favorite sportsbook early on before the UIGEA was passed in 2006. They have live betting and In-Play action that you can participate in. They offer betting on just about every sport and activity imaginable. Bet365 is one of the largest and most popular sportsbooks in Europe. You can receive a 100% bonus up to $200 on your first deposit at Bet365.

Getting Started With Online Sports Betting

After you have signed up for an account at an online sportsbook you will need to deposit money in order to place your bets on various sports.  Sportsbooks often have a list of different deposit methods that you can choose from including credit card deposit and online ewallet deposits.  The sportsbooks listed on our site are all regulated and safe betting sites that you can trust your money on, so there is no need to worry when making a deposit.  After you have made your deposit you will now have money in your account balance and you are ready to start betting!

Types of Betting

Online sports betting can be very interesting, as there are literally hundreds of different things you can bet on.  The online sportsbooks have odds listed for almost any sport you can think of, and offer a variety of different betting, such as spread betting, money line betting, over under betting, and prop betting.  Below we will introduce you to each type of betting offered, and educate you on the different type of sports betting for each of the most popular sports.

Money Line Betting

Money line betting is probably the most popular type of sports betting for beginners, because it is the easiest to understand.  Betting on a team on the money line simply means that you are picking them to win straight up.  When you place a bet on a team on the money line it doesn’t matter by how much or how little the team you bet on wins by, as long as they win.  Of course when betting on the money line teams that are heavily favoured will have small pay outs, and big underdogs will have big payouts.

Spread Betting

Betting against the spread is either picking the favoured team to win by a certain set number, or picking the underdog team to either win or lose by less than a set number.  The odds makers (people who set the odds for sports betting) will provide a line or spread on the favoured team, which you can bet on or against.  For example in the NFL a team may be favoured by 6.5 points.  You will then have the option to bet on that team to win by 7 or more points (cover the spread), or bet on the underdog team to lose by 6 or less points or win the game straight up.  When the odds makers set the spread they try and make it as close as possible to what they think the score will end up, giving almost even odds on either result.

Over Under Betting

Over Under betting (or game total betting) is a popular type of betting that involves betting on the total points or goals scored in a game.  The odds makers will again set a number that they think the score of both teams combined will add up to, giving you the option to bet on the score landing over or under that set number.  For example a NFL game total might be set to 42.5 total points.  As the bettor, you would be able to place a wager on the two teams combining for more than 42.5 points (the over), or less than 42.5 points (the under).  The odds for both the over and under in game total betting is usually pretty even.

Prop Betting

Prop betting is a fun type of betting where you can bet on something other than the final outcome of the game.  This can be something similar to the other types of betting, such as betting on the first half of a football game, or the over/under on the first quarter of a basketball game.  But is can also be something unique, such as which team will get the first penalty, who will score the first points, or even which player will score the first points.  There are thousands of different types of prop bets offered on almost every sport.  Prop betting is the most popular type of sports betting done on big events, such as the Super Bowl.
